Tip of the Month! Emergency! Flute Head Joint Leaks
|
|
Flute head joints are often the source of leaks. To check your head joint for leaks, you will need to perform a leak test. There are various ways to test for leaks, ranging from a sophisticated machine which will read out to you nearly an exact measure of resistance, or by simply covering the lip plate with your finger and then blowing into or creating suction on the tenon end of the head joint.
Other than an obvious crack in the walls of the head joint, there are 2 places where your head joint may leak. One place is where the lip plate is soldered to the head joint; it is not uncommon for this solder joint to leak, particularly on older head joints. The other place the head joint may leak is from the tuning cork.
If the lip plate is leaking, and you need an immediate fix, Applying clear fingernail polish to the entire soldered area normally works. To do this, first apply a bead of nail polish directly on the soldered joint around the entire circumference of the lip plate. Then apply the "suction test", it is important that you suck!!! The reason is the inward pressure will draw the polish into the area where the leak is.
A lot of head joint tuning cork leaks can also be solved using the above technique. This time, apply the bead of polish around the perimeter of the top of the tuning cork and the wall of the head joint, again sucking a current of air through to draw the polish into the tuning cork itself.
Another quick fix for head joint tuning cork leaks: Cork reacts to heat by expanding. With a heat source such as a bic lighter, warm the outside walls in the area of the tuning cork, gently rotating the head joint to evenly distribute the heat. Once the area is just past too hot to touch, stop and let it cool, then try the suction test.
These ideas and tips are strictly emergency ideas to help get through a gig or performance, they are not long-lasting repair techniques. | k
